WHEN A GOOD DEAL BECOMES EXPENSIVE

You got the discount.
Did you keep the savings?

Extra charges, rushed decisions, and unclear commitments can quietly erase the value of an agreement. Recognizing the problem is the first step. Handling it differently takes practice.

01 / HIDDEN COSTS

Savings disappear after signing.

Change orders, freight, delays, quality problems, and extra work turn an attractive price into an expensive agreement.

02 / INTERNAL PRESSURE

Leverage disappears before negotiating.

Premature supplier commitments, late involvement, and pressure to “just get it done” limit your options.

03 / UNCLEAR COMMITMENTS

Everyone expects something different.

Vague scope, delivery dates, responsibilities, and performance requirements create avoidable conflict and rework.

FOUR HOURS. TWO DAYS. YOUR REAL AGREEMENTS.

What we’ll cover

Bring an upcoming or past agreement you want to improve. Work through the risks, practice your response, and leave with a plan you can use.

DAY ONE • WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28

Find the leaks.
Negotiate the whole agreement.

1–3 p.m. New York time

  • Spot hidden costs: look beyond price to scope, delivery, quality, capacity, service, and supplier replacement risk.
  • Check promised versus delivered: compare agreed cost, timing, and performance with what actually happens.
  • Find the behavior behind the leak: notice quick concessions, assumptions, avoided questions, and reactions to pressure.
  • Ask what you’ve been avoiding: uncover interests and clarify expectations before committing.
  • Protect your position internally: address early commitments and align stakeholders before approaching the supplier.
  • Apply the diagnostic: map potential leaks in an upcoming or past agreement of your own.

DAY TWO • THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29

Change the behavior.
Protect and prove the value.

1–3 p.m. New York time

  • Practice pushback: respond when a supplier resists or a colleague presses for an immediate yes.
  • Use YES, IF™: make agreement conditional on what matters and trade rather than give concessions away.
  • Make commitments executable: define scope, dates, acceptance criteria, responsibilities, and how changes are approved.
  • Plan follow-through: name an owner, agree checkpoints, and bring actual results back to the negotiator.
  • Examine incentives: identify who gets rewarded for the deal and who bears its hidden costs.
  • Document your contribution: use the Value Capture Tracker to distinguish risks from confirmed losses and record evidence of value protected.

WHAT YOU’LL TAKE BACK TO WORK

An agreement you can act on.

You’ll work toward a practical plan for an upcoming or past agreement, with clearer requests, better follow-through, and a way to show the value of your work.

  • A map of potential leaks in your agreement
  • Questions and conditional requests to use in your next conversation
  • Practice handling pushback and internal pressure
  • A simple promised-versus-delivered check
  • An owner and checkpoint plan for follow-through
  • A Value Capture Tracker for documenting results
  • Access to Ruth’s Skool academy to continue learning
